QuestionI bought a tomato from the grocery store and wanted to plant the seeds out of it. Will the tomato that come off the plant taste as good as the store bought tomato?
AnswerThe answer to your question depends on the variety of the tomato you purchased. If the tomato is a hybrid, the offspring will not have the same characteristics as the parent plant. Seeds only bear true to the parent plant on heirloom varieties.
Most tomatoes sold today are hybrids. These varieties have been specially bred to resist disease and to combine growth habits of several popular varieties.
My recommendation is to purchase seed from a catalog or garden center. The seed packets give quite a bit of information which should assist you in making a good decision based on your own personal tastes.
Attached is a website of an excellent seed company that does offer free catlaogs by request. Just type tomato under search and you will get information on every variety they sell.
