QuestionI planted grass for the first time about a month ago and it looks beautiful except for some weed spots. I know one of the weeds is crabgrass and the other one my neighbor refers to as "pig weed". I think it has the word broad in the name but not sure. I want to purchase weed killer but am not sure which one to buy or how it is applied. The same thing goes with fertilizer. I have steer manure and used it when I tilled the soil before planting the seed. I was told to fertilize after a month. Any suggestions or help you can give would be soooooooo appreciated! I live in So. CA. The type of grass I planted was Ryegrass. Thank you!
Kathy
AnswerKathy,
Since your new grass is only 1 month old, do not use any herbicides as the ryegrass is not mature enough to tolerate the herbicide. Contact your local extension office for turf recommendations for your area.
I always recommend that the homeowner use the Scotts Turf Bulder products. They are more expensive than steer manure but is soooo much better for the turf. Again follow the recommendation from the extension office for your area. Here is the URL http://danr.ucop.edu/regional.htm
Good luck
