Japanese Maple Starts

Question
Can you make a start plant from a cutting of a Japanese Maple? If so what is the best prcedure.
If this is not your ares of expertise, would it possible for you to direct me in the right direction. Thanks for any help.

Answer
Darrell,

Sure, the process is detailed and you must have the proper equipment.  Rooting success is related to the age of the plant.  The literature says that cuttings from 50 yr old trees root at 25% and 80% from 4 yr old trees.

Take softwood cuttings, 6" to 8", wound, use 1% to 2% IBA,in well-drained media, and supply mist.  Collect cuttings mid-May to mid-June.  After rooting leave the cuttings alone until they have gone through a dormant period.  Supplying supplemental light immediately after rooting will increase over-wintering survival.

If you want to do this to save money, forget it.  Go and buy an established tree.

Good luck

Gary
