QuestionDear Tom,
I would like to know the difference in growing habit of plants growing on a south-facing slope and those growing on a north-facing slope.
I think that plants grow well when they get enough sunlight. So, does it mean that plants growing on north-facing slopes in Southern hemisphere will have a better performance than on south-facing slopes (lack of sunlight)?
Similarly, do plants growing on south-facing slopes in Northern hemisphere will have a better performance than on north-facing slopes?
Thanks!
Yours sincerely,
Raymond
AnswerHi Raymond,
Thanx for your question. I do not believe that the positon of the plant in a certain hemisphere has anything to do with its growth habits. The sun hits the Earth the same with in the Southern hemisphere as it does in the Northern hemisphere. Plant growth remains constant depending upon the amount of sunlight the plant receives. There are places in Argentina and Chile that have climates similar to California and Montana some warm some with very cold winters. The only difference that I know of is that there is supposedly an extensive hole in the ozone layer around Antarctica that is thought to be causing an increase in skin cancer in Australia and Argentina. I hope this helps
