QuestionI have several baldcypress trees that are now bearing seed. Last fall, I gathered some seed and sowed them in planting soil and just left them outside to see what mother nature would do with them. This spring, I had one seed to germinate out of 100. Any advice as to how to get better success would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
AnswerHi Barry,
Thanx for your question. After the seedling has its second set of true leaves you can transplant it to the area you want it to grow. Fertilize it with a balanced fertilizer according to the directions on the package. Make sure it gets plenty of water (at least once a week if no regular rain. You can side dress it with some cow manure.
With some trees it may take several seasons for more of the seeds to germinate. Some seeds require 3 or 4 winter exposures before they break dormancy. There are some varieties of cacti and roses that take 4-6 seasons for their seeds to break dormancy. I would leave the container outside and water it. I believe more will germinate next spring. I hope this helps.
