QuestionHi: A friend of mine just brought back Muncher Bier Radish seeds for me. The instructions are in german, and I a m not sure how to plant. Do the same rules for regular radihes apply? Also, what is the best possible soil to grow these radishes in?
Thanks for your help!
AnswerKaren, you need to plant them 1/4 inch deep and 3" apart. I always recommend raised beds for root crops. My raised beds are 12" deep, but 8" will suffice. Add as much organic material to the soil as possible to improve the tilth, resulting in a more rich loamy soil. These amendments include shredded leaves, compost, peat moss, and aged manure. If you can't build a raised bed, be sure to till in these same materials to improve your current soil conditions.
Also, do not fertilize with a high nitrogen fertilizer. Instead, use one high in phosphorus and potassium. Nitrogen tends to result in lush foliage and small roots. This works fine for leafy plants such as lettuce, but not for root crops or fruit-bearing vegetables.
Finally, mulch the plants with straw or dried grass clippings to hold in the moisture and keep down the weeds. This mulch will eventually decompose and add nutrients to the soil, much like the other materials I mentioned earlier.
Good luck, and have a great day.

Mike
