QuestionDespite my best efforts (sterile soil, new peatpots) I find a delicate weblike fungus among my new seedlings. Where might this come from, and will it harm the seedlings? I have been touching the webs with a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol when I am able to do this without disturbing the seedlings. Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

AnswerHi Priscilla,
Thanx for your question. The substance you write about sounds like the damping off disease (fungus). I use a thin layer of milled sphagnum moss (available at most nurseries) on top to the potting soil. If you have to surface plant seeds (because they require light for germination) press the seeds into the milled sphagnum moss otherwise the damping off disease will eventually kill all or most of your seedlings. I hope this helps.
