QuestionHi Tom,
I bought a new property in which there is an apple tree. This tree has a lot of apple during fall. I love the smell it gives. Unfortunately, you cannot find a single apple on this tree that does not have a black spot all the way inside each apple. The apple does not seem to be spoiled. However, most of it is uneatable. But the rest is delicious. This bad parts makes the apple uneatable. I have been told this tree is called crab(?) apple and may need some kind of fumigation of some sort to make it healthy agian.
Would you give me some guidance as what/when I could do, if any, to make this tree all healthy again. This tree has a lot of branched going stright up vertically. Someone suggeted that these branches are called suckers and need to be cut. The spring is around the corner and I would very much like to be ready and do something about this condition.
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Sincerely, Al
AnswerHi Al,
Thanx for your question. It sounds to me like the tree needs pruning and it may also need some treatment for insects or some other pest. The best thing to do is take a picture of the tree and a sample of a branch (too bad you don't have any fruit) and take it to your local county agent. If you will tell me the state and county you are at, I will put you intouch with the county agricultural extension agent. S/he will be able to advise you on exactly what you need to do. I hope this helps.
Tom
