QuestionHi Tom,
I have purchased some cleome seeds that I want to start indoors and transplant into my perennial garden. I have never started a plant from seed before and I have some questions. I know I am supposed to get them started about 6 weeks prior to transplanting, but can you give me any more hints? I'm wondering how much sunlight they require to germinate and what temperature is best...that kind of thing. Any hints would be appreciated.
Shelley
AnswerHi Shelley,
Thanx for your question. One thing the seed companies don't tell you about is that most seeds started indoors need to be started under a strong light and not in a south or east facing window. In most parts of the country, the sun is not yet strong enough and will cause the seedlings to be leggy. You can use a 40 watt, 4foot long shop light and suspend it about 8 inches above the seedlings. Keep the soil moist and best if covered with clear plastic. Give light about 10 hours a day and keep temps at about 70 degrees F. Germination will occur quickly. If you can move the seedlings and the light to a cooler temperature (around 60-65) this will help prevent legginess too and will cause the plant to grow more compact. You can plant your seedlings outdoors after the last frost but make sure you acclimate them by placing them in a shady place that is spared from extremes in temps, wind, sun and rain for about 7 days. I hope this helps.
