QuestionI have a plant(garlic?) that has a large round 2 inch ball shaped flower on a tall stem (only one flower}colored purple. Question: Does this flower have seeds in it? How do I save the seeds and plant them? Thanks!
AnswerHi Pete,
Thanx for your question. If it is a garlic or wild onion, it will have a round ball seed pod tapered at the end. Seeds will be produced inside this ball. Some garlic will produce this head and tiny garlic bulbs will be inside (about the size of a small pea). Wait until the pod dries out completely and then you can collect the bulblets (that's really what they are, miniature bulbs). Plant them directly into the ground in the fall 30 days before the last frost. All of them will not survive but some should produce new plants next spring. The best way to propagate garlic is to dig the bulb up and separate it. The bulb is fashioned into separate sections. Each section will produce a new plant and much more reliable than the bulblets that are produced at the top of the plant. Don't try to save the bulblets too long unless you refrigerate them in a closed plastic baggie or they may become too dried out and die. I hope this helps.
