QuestionWhat is the correct time of year to take seed off the Auricula plant.
AnswerHi Robin,
Thanx for your question. I only have experience with a few varieties of primula and auriculas aren't one of the varieties. I do know that seed can be harvested when the flower has faded and the capsule turns brown. Watch closely so that the seeds aren't released (check the plant every day). Blooming occurs in April and early May so the end begin to look for seed capsules when many of the flowers have become wilted. Seed should be sown in temps of 60-65 degrees F in moist but not soggy soil, sown over the top of the soil and lightly pressed. Do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the pot in a sealed, clear plastic bag or place a piece of clear glass over the pot. Germination occurs in 30 days but can be sporadic if the seed is even a few weeks old (the seed begins to go dormant and eventually may not be viable if kept to long in a dry condition). For more information, I have included the URL to the Primula Society that will better be able to answer your question. I hope this helps. http://www.auriculaandprimula.org.uk/
