QuestionI live in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. I'm replacing an area of grass in front of my home with landscaping. My area doesn't get much severe weather in the winter. I'm planning to plant hearty plants. How late in the season can I plant? Thank you.
AnswerHi David,
The best way to answer this question is to determine when the ground freezes if at all. You can continue to plant hardy plants as long as the ground doesn't completely freeze. The reason for this is that the roots need time unimpeded by frozen soil to penetrate their new surroundings. There are places in Oregon and Northern California that this can be done for most of the year. You may get some occasional freezes but then warm up above freezing during the day. As long as the soil doesn't freeze down permanently you'll be okay. I hope this helps.
