QuestionI have a rose bush that once grew in my father's garden and I am interested in finding out more information about how to reproduce other plants. Thank you!

AnswerSarah, the easiest method for propagating roses is with cuttings. You need to take a cutting from new growth, not from a woody stem. Cut off 6"-8" and place it immediately into a bucket of water. Take the stem inside, and remove the lower sets of leaves, leaving only one or two sets. Dip the cutting in a rooting powder (this can be purchased at any nursery or reputable garden center) and plant the cutting at least 2" deep into a 4" pot. Water deeply. Cover the pot with a clear plastic bag or plastic wrap. Place the pot out of direct sunlight.
After about 10 days, check to see if the cutting has rooted. If so, remove the plastic bag and place the pot in a sunny window. Make sure to continue watering every 3-4 days. After 4 weeks, gradually begin to acclimate the plant to the outdoors over a seven day period by first placing it out for 3 hours the first day, and then doubling the time each day until it is out overnight. You can then plant the rose bush in a sunny area of your choice.
I hope this answered your question. Good luck, and pleas write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Mike
