Bulbs vs. seeds

Question
Question from 3rd grade science book...

If a plant grows from a bulb, does it still have seeds?

Several areas of the book semed to contradict by saying that a bulb is part of the stem.  Also, my better half insists that her day lillies were grown from bulbs but has collected seeds after the blooms have gone.  Help, test Friday!!!

Answer
Pat, bulbs do produce flowers that will produce seed if not deadheaded immediately after fading.  Most gardeners and breeders, however, do not propagate using seed.  It's much easier to split the bulbs in the fall.  The bulbs will bloom the following year whereas plants grown from seed take three years to fully develop a bulb large enough to bloom.

I hope this answered your question.  Good luck with the test, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
