Questionfor the past week the leaves started falling off in excess, usually I see 4-5 a week, now about 10 a day, this plant has 3 trunks and about 6' tall, soil is very alkaline, soil is moist.
any suggestions
AnswerHi Frank, almost always this time of year, leave drop from this plant is associated with a light or water issue. New plants or existing plants that are moved even slightly (one side of a window to the other), go through a period of adjustment to the light and shed foliage as they adapt. They are also very prone to root rot which can cause them to defoliate. They need excellent drainage and should go a while between watering.
I'd want a minimum of 8 hours direct sun, little or no fertilize and thorough but very infrequent watering.
As the sun drops lower in the sky in the fall, they'll start to go through a period of dormancy with even less water and often some leaf drop. Little early for dormancy now, so I suspect since your soil is moist, water is the issue. Let it dry and dry it if you can. Either set it outside in a similar light environment (we don't want to cook the leaves if it's not used to direct sun) or set a fan by the pot to help draw off the moisture. Then water very carefully. Jim
