Question
We recently moved into our house. We uncovered an unpleasant discovery. I am in the processing of removing soil that was saturated by motor oil. My question is, where or how do I get rid of the contaminated soil? My husband said to put it in the trash, but in my mind, that is not solving the problem. It is only transferring the same problem to a different location.

Hi Donna, You are absolutely right. It should go to a hazardous material landfill, not your local landfill.  Check with your local sanitation department.  Many towns either have a permanent collection site for hazmat items or set up one periodically. If they don't, then ask them where the closest one is or how you should properly dispose of it. They should know that and be able to tell you any special requirements necessary like sealing it in containers, etc. Thank you for doing the right thing!  Jim
