QuestionCan Horse Manure cause soil to compact? The Reason I'm asking is because I got some horse manure and put it on where my Devil Claws were. The soil was compacted under it.
AnswerHi, As organic matter decomposes into smaller and smaller particles it may slow water movement through coarse soils. In clay soils it should improve compaction...for a while. In a couple of years, the organic matter is virtually gone and the soil returns to its previous state. In most cases, you should incorporate no more than 30% new organic matter into existing soils.
