can i throw worms into my potted plants?

Question
i recently picked up an interest in growing plants and was very surprised to see that most of my seeds had sprouted! i have 4 various cactus potted in "cactus soil" as well as some sunflower seedlings and a baby chili plants potted in a basic kind of soil. what i am wondering is if i can buy some red worms and throw then into the soil that my plants currently are living in.

on a side note: i have started a compost bin but its not the kind that contains worms.

Answer
Hi Rachael, Yes you can except they probably will not survive in the cactus containers.  Normally the soil should be kept very dry and earthworms like a more moist environment.  They feed on decomposing organic matter, so I'd mix a little of your compost in the soil if you can and you may need to supplement their food with a little cornmeal.  Jim
