QuestionDear Mr. Crowder,
We just noticed a lot of white fuzzy growth/fungus on our crab apple tree. We have lived at this location since 1998 and this is the first time we have ever seen this on our tree.
What can be done about this fungus and what caused it?
Thank you very much.
AnswerHi LeRae, Crabapples are prone to leaf diseases and are especially hard hit in areas of prolonged high humidity. Fuzzy stuff on the leaves can be controlled with Captan fungicide or if you prefer an organic option, then use sulfur or potassium bicarbonate. You should be able to get these at any independent garden center.
Fuzzy stuff on the trunk is usually a sign of wood boring insects. As the sap leaks out of an entry hole, fungus then grows on the sap. Clean away any leaking sap with one part clorox and nine parts water, then spray the entire trunk with permethrin. Jim
