coffee grinds

Question
I have been told that adding coffee grinds to the soil around our sago palm is helpful.  What are the benefits of using coffee grinds?  Can I use coffee grinds around all of my plants?

Answer
Hi Helen, Here are the facts:
1.  Coffee grounds are very acidic.  Your plant may or may not appreciate a pH change.  It all depends on your current pH.
2.  They are very high in nitrogen. Which is fine for a sago, not so good on fruiting or flowering plants.
3.  Dump them on the soil and fungus will grow on them which is never good.

So...my recommendation is don't. Put them in a compost pile, let them age a while and then use the compost to plant with or make potting soil.

A little may not hurt, once in a great while, but don't make a habit of it, your plants are likely to suffer.  Jim
