QuestionThe soil on our newly purchased land has a high alkaline pH, 8+ on a soil test kit - how can we properly prepare our soil for veggies, flowers, and trees? Neighbors say use Gypsum - I've read articles that say not to use that additive - please advise. Thanks
AnswerHi Patti, I would not use gypsum. It can turn clay into muck. I'd use iron sulfate (copperas), aluminum sulfate or sulfur to lower the pH to 7 or just below. Follow the label instructions for quantity and coverage. I'd take a soil sample to your local independent nursery. Many will test your pH for free and I'd get a second reading before adjusting anything. I've seen some questionable results from some test kits. An inexpensive pH meter is usually very close to correct. Jim
