QuestionI have white mold in one of my flower beds. It makes a solid layer on top of the bed. I have removed it in the past and it keeps coming back. I think the leaves falling in the bed are contributing to the problem. Is there something I can do or put in the bed to prevent it from coming back that won't kill my existing shrubs and flowers?
AnswerHi, If you keep the bed raked clean to bare ground, it will not come back. The fungus is not hurting anything. It's part of the natural decomposition of leaves to make topsoil. Leaves should be pulled away from the trunks of plants and the crowns of perennials in the summer, but they can be left on the bed to help control weeds. In early fall, rake out any remaining leaves in preparation of the new crop falling.
If you don't want the leaves, use a coarse hardwood mulch (replaced every year) and you should not have the problem. Leave it more than a year, and the fungus will start to decompose it also.
Decorative rock mulch is the only sure way of it not returning but make sure you keep the leaves raked out of it also. Jim
