Amount of material for raised beds?

Question
Hello! I have four raised beds that are 4 by 8 and 12" deep. Could you please tell me the best amount/ratio of soil and/or ammendments for these? They will all be for vegetables. They are completely empty right now. Thank you so much for any help!

Answer
Hi Danielle, I'd like to have about 60-70% clay and the balance in compost, finely ground bark and manure.  If you plan on growing many root crops, drop the clay to 40-50% and the balance in the above organic matter.  You might save one bed for root crops.  You'll need just a little over a cubic yard (27 cubic feet) of material for each bed.  Blend it thoroughly and don't forget to check you pH, it should be around 6.5 to 7.  Jim
