QuestionI live in the hot, humid south. Last year I had a new problem. My hibiscus were partially uprooted by wind more than once. Same size plants, pots and soil(MiracleGro potting soil). Would MiracleGro or another brand of garden soil provide additional support to the roots and still drain sufficiently? If not, what would you recommend? Thanks
AnswerHi Johnny, Lightweight container mix soils like Miracle Gro are better than garden soils in pots. However, the downside is, if you have a light weight pot or a large plant in too small of a pot, it's top heavy and the pot flips over or wind can uproot it if the soil dries.
Here are some cures:
A layer of decorative rock, lava rock, etc. on the soil surface to give it extra weight on top the rootball.
Get a piece of heavy wire (I've used coat hangers) that is longer than twice the depth of the pot. Fold it in half so it looks like a giant hairpin. Push it through the soil, as close to the trunk as possible and out the drainage hole in the bottom. Fold the ends. If your pot doesn't sit flat, put a layer of pea gravel in your saucer to steady the pot.
For large plants like hibiscus, I always put 2"-3" of coarse gravel in the bottom for extra weight. Jim
