When is the proper time to apply fall fertilizer?
Should it be done when the grass has stopped growing and after the first frost, or sometime before then?

AnswerHi Van, Nitrate nitrogen is quickly available to plants in cold or warm soil. You can apply it anytime. I'd apply an application 30 days or so before your first freeze date. Ammoniac nitrogen is only available in warm soil, so when your soil temperature cools below 45 degrees, there's not much point in using it. Jim
