QuestionAt the beginning of July we had new top soil and sod put in. Since the install I have been under attach from crab grass, Is this because the topsoil they used was not screened? How do i get rid of the crab grass?
AnswerHi Buster, Crabgrass seed is everywhere. You can fill a container with potting soil and if there is any crabgrass nearby, it will sprout in the pot. I suspect the seed was being blown in before the sod was finished. There are several crabgrass control products available to kill what is there, check with your local garden center, however it is killed by frost, so I'm not sure this late in the season, that I would bother. Use a pre-emerge in late February to prevent it from coming up from seed next year. Right now, concentrate on getting your turf as thick and healthy as possible. The thicker the turf, the less weeds you will have. Jim
