Extremely hard ground

Question
The ground in our yard is extremely hard.  It is difficult to get anything to grow there well.  I once borrowed my father's tiller to help the problem, but the ground is so hard that it BROKE the tiller.  One of my neighbors recently put in a sprinkler system, it took him a very long time to dig the canal for this and the dirt inside the hole looked much like concrete.  Is there anything I can do to improve this difficult ground?

Answer
Hi JanaLee, It needs to be tilled.  Rent, borrow or buy a heavy duty rear tine tiller.  It won't be easy work.  Once it's loosened, cover the area with some type organic matter (leaves, grass clippings, fine bark, compost, etc.) and till it again.  Check your pH, you may need lime and a light application of gypsum tilled in would also help.
I wish there was an easier answer for you...but there's not.  Jim
