hard soil

Question
my front yard will not take seed. it is so hard it cant catch hold and grow . can i use lime to loosen it up to plant seed this spring? please help. we live in Gladewater , texas that is zone 8 if that helps

Answer
Hi Crystal, You may need lime, but it will not loosen your soil.  There is no quick and easy fix.  You'll need to till the soil 6-8" deep and incorporate some organic matter and a little sand to help keep the soil loose.  Have your pH checked, it should be around 6.5 for most turf grass.
Spread one inch of sand and an inch of organic matter (leaves, grass clippings, compost or finely ground bark) and lime (if needed) over the area and till it in.  Then plant your seed at the appropriate time.  When you plant, depends on the type of grass.  Check with your local independent garden center to make sure you are planting the correct type.
Limit traffic on the new grass until it's established.
