backyard lawn destoyed by dog waste

Question
Jim,
First, Thank you for your time, hours, you spend answering our questions. In this 3/2007 question you suggested, among other soil amendments, urea. Will this help if I use it directly on the dog waste in my yard? I live in South Louisiana where it rains often, and I don't always get it scooped up before it is too wet to do so.  I am looking for something, anything to help this stuff dissolve quickly. I also heard box turtles in my yard would help. Thanks again for your time.

Answer
Hi Abbey, Yes, it will speed up decay, but in cold weather, it will be slower than in warm weather.  The heat generated by the nitrogen helps jumpstart the microbes and speed decay, but it may also brown your grass and it will lower the pH, so you'll probably need to lime too.
If you can't pick it up regularly, consider training your dog to go in a specific area.  I adopted a 7 year old dog about a year ago and she quickly learned to go in one flower bed area out of the lawn.
I don't think box turtles will help much.  Most lawns don't support enough food for them, they sleep when it's cold and your dog will probably annoy them enough to leave.  Jim
