QuestionI planted two bp junipers on each side of entry sidewalk. One is doing really well the other seems to be struggeling ( needles are spread out and plant is more on the side of brown than green like the other one. I live in central texas and they get about 6 hrs sunlight in am. Should i fertilize them or what can i do to make sure the struggeling one doesnt die ?
AnswerHi Kelly, If they haven't been planted long, I think you've got a water problem or possibly spider mites. Take a piece of white paper out to the plant and slap the foliage over the paper. Look for movement. Spider mites are about 1/2 the size of a period in the newspaper. No mites, then probably a water issue. Could be too much, could be too little. The end results are the same
But the more important issue is the sun. Junipers like 8-10 hours of sun or more. Morning sun hits one side of the plant, the back side gets little if any sun and it will brown off. Container plants could be turned for sun to hit all sides, but planted...the back side will get ugly. I'd consider another type of plant and move the junipers to a sunnier location.
I would not fertilize them, but a little root stimulator wouldn't hurt. Jim
