QuestionDearMr.Crowder thank you in advance for your help. For the past 3 years my strawberries have died 8-10 weeks after replanting them I have never had this problem with any plant. The plant store told me check the soil and use the right plant food. How do I check the soil and is mircle grow ok? Regards Fred
AnswerHi Fred, Here in Tennessee, the state university will test your soil for just a couple dollars per sample. Your county agent can probably do the same for you. If not, many independent garden centers will at least check your pH for you. Your pH should be around 6.5 and they should have at least 8 hours of sun.
If the problem is nutrient related, the plant should slowly die. It may be fungal, if the demise is quick. A good garden center should be able to tell you by looking at one of the sickly plants what the problem is. Take them a plant and a soil sample to test and to examine the texture.
I'd use a little osmocote and/or plant-tone fertilizer with a little superphosphate when planting and then spray feed a couple of times with a water soluble fertilizer at 1/2 strength unless your soil test reveals something seriously out of whack. Jim
