QuestionWe had our house built (near Raleigh, NC) two years ago. The contractor was nice enough to sod the front half of the lawn and seed the rest. What I didn't realize was that it was two different grasses. The front is sodded with centipede and the back seeded with tall fescue. Both seem to grow fine with the right care and the each have advantages/disadvantages. The problem of course is that they require different maintenance. What would be the easiest and most cost efficient way to remedy this. Labor is no problem but money could be. Thanks.
AnswerHi Tony, You are right, both have their advantages. You just need to make a choice of which you want the most. Centipede is great, low maintenance but sensitive to many common weed killers so keeping it weed free can be a challenge. It's slow to spread, not easy to grow from seed and expensive to sod. Plus, you are at the northern range of it's hardiness. A severe winter could damage it. More herbicides are available for use on fescue, it's easy and fairly cheap to re-seed and also low maintenance. Tough decision. Cost considered, I'd choose fescue. Further south, I'd choose centipede. Jim
