mossy residue on soil

Question
I have a large area in front of some mature pines where I'd like to plant some annuals. The soil is partially covered with a spotty greenish moss. I can remove it with a hoe or rototill it into the soil but I wonder if it is an indicator of an undersable soil condition. Any opinion?
Thanks
Carl Meyers

Answer
Hi Carl, Moss is an indicator of compacted soil and sometimes, but not always, acidic soil.  Check your pH, it should be 6-6.5 for most annuals.  Till the area and blend in some organic matter and you should be ready to plant.  Keep in mind the competition for water and nutrients under the pine tree is huge.  You'll need to water and fertilize frequently and till the area every year or two to grow annuals successfully.  Jim
