planting under pine trees

Question
hi!
i have 7 pine trees that line one side of my drive way, they belong to my neighbor and i just bought rhododendron to plant under them.  will it be okay since there is not alot of space between the pines and the driveway.

i figured i would space them between each pine in a row along side the driveway, any thought?  i read they were good with acidic soil, is this okay or do i need to find another space for them?

Answer
Hi Trina, The location sounds fine.  Rhodies like shady, well drained, acidic soil.  Check your pH, I suspect it's ok, but it should be about 5.5.  There will be considerable competition for water under those pines.  Make sure you dig a very wide hole, about 3 times the width of the rootball, and loosen it thoroughly so the rhodies can get established.  Plant them slightly elevated above your existing soil line and carefully monitor their water needs this first year.  Jim
