QuestionI live in the Portland Ore area,. in the country surrounded by fir trees. In the past several years we have had a decent yard. Then this last winter we have been invaded by moss, lots of it. I have applied moss killer to it and now it is starting to turn black, so I would imagine it is dead or dying. I have tried to rake s it out but in doing so I pull a divit out with no grass. In order to get rid of all of it I believe it will be a long term process. What can I do to the divits when I remove the moss? reseed, put chemicals down to neutralize the acidity? If I miss any moss during this will it come back to haunt me later? I might add that in the winter we get about 3 hrs of sunlight due to the height of the trees and the sun being low on the horizon. In the summer about 6 hrs of good sun. So it is always cool.
AnswerHi Kevin, I would not remove it, I'd till it into the soil. Moss grows well in compacted soil with little air movement. Tilling it will loosen the soil and incorporate the moss into the ground to help keep it loose. Then I'd lime, to get the pH back to 6.5, and re-seed the lawn. Make sure you keep the pH correct and every few years, aerate the lawn and the moss should have a tough time surviving. Jim
