QuestionI live in TN and my yard is full of red clay bare spots. I have tried adding topsoil and tilling in, but no luck. Folks have suggested that I use Lyme. I tilled that in and the grass started, but died. Can you please give me some useful advice on how to grow grass on red clay? Type of grass, additives, etc. I literally cannot grow any thing (except weeds) and appreciate your help.
AnswerHi Kevin, Lime should be added only after you've had your pH checked. It should be 6 - 6.5 for good turf production. If you tilled it and you know the pH is correct and it's getting ample sunlight to grow the type grass you have and you are watering it correctly, then we'd look to some other cause. Possibly fungal... could be brown patch or spring dead spot.
Go by your local garden center and take...a soil sample to be tested, a sample of your grass and pictures of the area. Your nurseryman should have enough information then to get you started in the right direction. Jim
