QUESTION: Can you grow plants in fine sandstone? What do you add to make it better.

ANSWER: Hi Maria, I'm not clear about your question.  Is it just rock?
Are you wanting to grow without soil?  I need a little more info.  Jim

QUESTION: t. Peter sandstone it is made of fine to medium size, well rounded quartz grains with frosted surfaces. That extent of the formation spans north-south from Minnesota to Missouri and east-west from Illinois into Nebraska and South Dakota. It is like sand.I like to grow native plants by amending the sandstone in low in nutrients compost, because I am planting on the boulevard and native plants do do not need high nutrients.  There also can be a chance of stormwater runoff, until the native plants mature.

Answer
Maria, If you are growing native plants to this type soil, you should not need soil additives.  They have evolved to thrive in that soil.  An organic fertilizer will boost them along and I'd probably add a compost tea to assist the microbes. But I'd be leery of adding organic matter to the rootzone of plants that don't naturally grow in it.
If these are native plants, but not native to this soil, then a little research will need to be done to determine what type soil each plant needs.  You'll need to consider not only the soil type, but the annual rainfall/drainage needs, temperature requirements and length of growing season if it needs to re-seed itself.  Jim
