QuestionI've just moved to TN about 2 years ago. I can't get grass to grow in my backyard. There is a large oak tree in the center of the yard. I would say that my yard does get at least 4 hours or more of sunlight. The area has been overseeded but to no avail. Please give me some suggestions.
AnswerHi LaRita, Growing grass under trees is difficult. You never see grass growing in the forest, you never see trees growing in grasslands. Some warm season grasses, like zoysia, will tolerate some shade. Some cool season grasses will survive the shade because their growing season is fall to early spring when the trees have no foliage and the grass is in full sun.
Which ever you choose to try (talk to your local garden center about the best grass for your area), you must prepare the soil under the tree so the grass can get established. It needs to be loosened, 3-4" if possible, and organic matter incorporated. You need to check your pH also. It should be 6 to 6.5.
An easier choice would be to use groundcovers (again, check with your local garden center for the best one for your area) or let it become what is was...a woodland garden. Jim
