QuestionI removed a large area of grass in my backyard in preparation for planting a 'garden in the round' if you will. After removing the grass I am left with brown clay.
Aside from tilling this area up (southern exposure, full sun), what should I amend this clay with? And will I be able to plant by fall, or will it take a season or two, or more, to get the soil in good enough shape?
AnswerHi Greg, You can plant this fall without any problem. First check you pH to see if it needs adjusting. For most perennials and flowers aim for 6 - 6.5. You must amend the soil by either tilling or site preparation when you plant. I'd apply 2" of finely ground pine bark, add a 1/4 - 1/2" of composted manure and till this into the top 6" of clay. Elevate your rootball when you plant and you should have a great garden. Jim
