QuestionI think my front lawn have the worse soil in my subdivison.I don't understand why my lawn is so dry and not healthy.I water my lawn everyday but it is not really working.I need some help to make it rich and healthy. What kind of fertilizers can help me fix this issue. What kind of soil products do I need to get and how long will it take to make my lawn rich in soil.
AnswerHi Vardi, Poor turf performance can be caused by a number of factors: Soil compaction, nutrient deficiency or improper fertilizing, improper pH, over and under watering, improper cutting and most commonly a combination of several of these factors.
Do your neighbors aerate their lawns? If so, you should, if not, you probably don't need it.
Fertilize with a good turf builder fertilizer, avoid products with all or high ammoniacal nitrogen.
Check you pH, it should be 6 to 6.5 and adjust it up with lime, down with aluminum sulfate or high iron products.
Water thoroughly but infrequently. Everyday is too much.
Even in time of drought, every 4-5 days should be sufficient (unless you soil is sand) and you are using the proper grass for your area.
Mow often enough that you only remove 1/3 or less of the leaf blade. How high and often you cut will depend on the grass variety so check with your local nurseryman for the above products to fix your lawn and proper varietal care. Jim
