Question
I have noticed when I mow our lawn the soil is very hard.  I have heard we have "Clay Soil" here on Long Island.  My grass is ok, I do not use fertilizer or anything due to laziness, but I am wondering if you have any suggestions for making the lawn soil softer or if this is necessary.  Thanks.  Roslyn

Hi Roslyn, If the quality of your turf is acceptable, then why bother?  Aerating, incorporating organic matter into the soil, fertilizing and liming (if necessary) will make a better turf but requires work. If you're happy with what you have, just mow it!  JIm
