QuestionI want to make a perenial bed and I want the soil to be well draining. What ingredients would you recomend that I use to acchieve this and in what percentages?
AnswerHi Bonnie, On top of your existing soil I'd put 2-3" of finely ground pine bark, 1/2" to 1" of composted manure and 1/2" to 1" of sand. Then till all of this into the top 6-8" of your existing soil. This will give you a uniform blended layer 10-12" deep and the bed will be elevated 3-4" above your existing soil line to improve drainage. After tilling, check your pH. It should be 6 to 6.5 for most perennials. Jim
