Planting Garden where there used to be a Cedar Hedge

Question
We took down a large cedar hedge, and we would like to plant a garden in its place.  We could not take out all the roots, so we are planning on adding topsoil on top.  Is there anything else we need to do or add to help with the acidity of the soil. Thanks

Answer
Hi Russ, Check you pH.  It should be 6.5 for most flowers or a vegetable garden.  Once you have a reading, you'll add lime to raise it or sulfur to lower it.
Just a word of caution...avoid layers of unlike soil.  If you have a layer of top soil and harder soil underneath, you'll find it to be a watering nightmare.  It's best to incorporate organic matter into you're existing soil, or if you must add soil, make sure it is similar to the soil you already have.  Jim
