QuestionHi James,
I hope you have an answer for me or if not maybe a direction to point me to.
I am curious if I will be able to plant a vegetable garden over my septic leeching field.
It is the largest, sunniest place in the yard, and seems like a pretty logical place to put it.
I don't plan to do any root veggies like beets or potatoes or anything. But I also do not intend to bring in any additional loam.
I am not that concerned about what the vegetables are growing in, because to me fertilizer is fertilizer. What I am concerned about is somehow compromising my leeching field. I don't know if digging into it, even six inches is harmful or not.Any thoughts I would appreciate.
Thanks Terri
AnswerHi Terri, That's where I'd put my garden. The only problem I have ever seen was in areas that already drained poorly and gardeners had over and improperly watered their garden in the summer. Saturated soil may cause your septic system to fill and backup but the chances are very, very slim with thorough, infrequent watering.
I'd till it, plant it and reap the benefits of home grown veggies and garden therapy. Jim
