unknown fungus or ?? in grass

Question
I have something unknown in my grass. It is growing just under the surface and I'm finding it when the dog scratches at it and breaks it open.  It comes to the surface as a "bubble" that looks like a normal dirt clod, but when it is scratched open, it is hollow and looks like a mushroom/fungus.  It is flexible, but not spongy/soft like a mushroom, it's pretty firm.  I took some pictures and could email them to you if it would help.  since I have dogs and small kids, hoping I can identify it so I can get rid of it.  Thanks in advance,

Answer
Hi Craig, It is indeed a a type of fungus (mushroom).  Often they are so hard they're mistaken for a root or an old tree stump. The part above ground is the reproductive part, most of the organism is not visible. Is it toxic?  Most aren't, most taste bad and are not normally eaten by pets and children but for a positive identification, I'd take one by your local garden center or agricultural extension service.  Controlling them is not easy. You'll need to treat the area with a good soil fungicide.  I'd use Consan 20 as often as the label allows for a full growing season.  Jim
