QuestionWe moved into a 1958 rancher with an erosion problem in the rear of the house, In the southeast corner of our lot there is a hill that gradually slopes down to the front of the house. There are large trees which inhibit the growth of grass. In that corner an erosion problem concerns us every time it rains. The slope loses soil and there is a large tree next to the slope where we can already see most of the roots from the soil being washed away. Can you suggest any remedies?
AnswerHi Mark, I would suggest a groundcover to help hold the soil since this is a gradual slope. My first choices would be Vinca minor, Vinca major or English Ivy if these are hardy where you live. If not, check with you local garden center for an appropriate alternative. I'd like to use a groundcover that runs on top the soil versus one that spreads by underground runners like Ajuga or Pachysandra. You'll get much quicker results with a running or vining type groundcover. Spray feed it often (every 10-14 days) during the growing season to get the quickest results.
Good Luck. Jim
