QuestionI am looking to buy a house possibly, and the back yard is at least an acres of orange clay and rocks everywhere!! I am a female looking to buy this property by myself, and wondered if there is a good way to remove these rocks. I have a nice John Deere riding lawnmower, that could pull some type of equipment to maybe remove these rocks?, or maybe just have sod put down over this. The land is sloping, so i don't want to wait to long, because of water run off already occurring. I live in Sanford NC,, thanks so much for your advice

AnswerHi Debi, If these rocks are larger than gravel, the best way to remove them is...one at a time. If you had someone come in with a large tractor and box blade, I suspect they would just uncover more rock and remove soil that I'd like to keep. So if these are larger rocks, then you're only other option is to bring in soil and spread a layer (using the same soil as your existing soil) over the area, packing it slightly and then sowing annual ryegrass on it to hold it in place until warmer weather and you can plant your grass of choice. You would not want to spread soil under the canopy or within 20' of the dripline of existing trees.
If this is just gravel, I'd drive your John Deere over the area repeatedly to pack it slightly and just sow annual ryegrass now. After May 1, I'd sow bermudagrass seed and as your turf develops, you'll probably not notice the gravel when mowing or walking on the turf.
In high traffic areas around your home, I'd consider spreading some soil as suggested above. The depth really depends on the size of the rock you're wanting to cover.
The most important thing to remember when adding soil, is to use the same soil you have. Unlike textures dry at different rates and cause roots to grow improperly resulting in stress or death in times of drought or cold.
Good luck in your new home. Jim
