mushrooms in garden

Question
I have lots of mushrooms coming up now.  It is not from poor drainage as I live in Fl. and it is very sandy.  We tend to have acid soil.  I fertilize with 10-10-10.

Answer
Hi Marcia, All you need for mushrooms is decomposing organic matter (a good thing).  Most mushrooms are not harmful to your lawn or garden, really just a sign of natural, healthy processes going on.  A few, like fairy ring, may be harmful to your turf, depending on your grass type.
The part you see is just the reproductive part, most of the fungus is below the soil surface.  Some of these fungus may be controlled by continually destroying the "mushroom" before it matures.  You can do this with just a jet stream hose nozzle.  Some may need to be sprayed (repeatedly) with a good fungicide.
Unless you see your turf suffering, I would not worry about them.  If you're concerned about pets or children eating them, then take the above actions.  Jim
