QuestionWe live in Florida and here they like to spread this cypress mulch all over our bedding areas and all boarding the base of the house. Seems this terrible mulch breeds all kinds of fungus, including mushrooms of all shapes and sizes and something else called "artillery fungus" which shoot poppy seed sized spores all over the house and into the screens of lanais and windows. It is really a mess and a nusiance. What is the best approach to get rid of this problem once and for all, if there is any solution. Your help as always, is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jeff
AnswerHi Jeff, Wherever you have decomposing organic matter, you'll have mushrooms and other fungi and most of them are not harmful, just a nuisance. Artillery fungus is a real problem and I don't know of anything that will remove the spots from siding or painted surfaces. You'll probably do more damage to the surface trying to scrape them off, so priming and painting are probably your best option. They have sort of a super glue on them and when the spore packet erupts, they can be propelled as high as 20'.
Usually, we see it associated with wood mulch, not bark mulch, pine straw, pea gravel or lava rock. I would suggest you change to one of the above mulches. If wood mulch is your choice, remove and replace it each year or at least rake and loosen it to improve air movement and cover with a layer of fresh mulch.
Good Luck, Jim
