conditioning ohio-clay soil

Question
I bought a load of soil for new beds last fall that was suposst to have "conditioners" in it to compensate for the clay base. The soil was moist, dark in color and crumbled very fine, looked good. I planted many iris bulbs in it that now look like they are in a dessert in arizona, very cracked (cratered) and dry.  Rain generally pools on top and runs off the sides in some spots, raised beds. Also, it has settled quite a bit. Is there any way to condition these beds without starting over and giving some releief to the plants?  I'm afraid suffient water won't get through and drainage will just be another story.
Please, any information will be most helpful.

Answer
Hi Sandy
It sounds to me like you got some regular topsoil with some peat added in. I would work in some compost and try to use a soaker hose to water. the water should penetrate better and the compost will break up the soil for you. add some every year to build your beds.  Good Luck  Larry :-)
